EPISODE #130: WATCH THE SKIES

There’s lots of chatter in the media about some Navy encounters with some sort of mystery drones, but meanwhile in the Western United States we’ve been having a good old-fashioned flying-saucer flap. Seen by regular people with their own eyes! On May 15 of this year, dozens of witnesses reported a variety of enormous, luminous craft flying in utter silence over Washington state, Oregon, British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana.

Now is the time for EPISODE #130: “WATCH THE SKIES.” With new sounds from RedBlueBlackSilver.

Which means it’s time for EPISODE #129: UNDER THE HOOD, WITH THE WOOD RATS S5E5. New tracks tonight from RedBlueBlackSilver, along with a desert-survival training film from the U.S. Army Air Force.

MEDICINE SHOW WITH SINGING DOG

We have been sick, and we need the medicine of the show. Campfire stories, tent revivals, Shakespeare in the Park, knife fights at the honky-tonk, etc. Now that performance is returning to the stage, whether theater or movies or street dancers, we spend some time at the campfire to follow the long thread from ancient-world traveling players to the Old West medicine shows that continued into the 1940s.

It’s EPISODE #128: MEDICINE SHOW, S5E4. New tracks tonight from RedBlueBlackSilver. Find out more about our book, our periodical, and all the other desert creations we make for you at DesertOracle.com.

Because the second vaccine dose knocked your host to the ground . . . he went ahead and made a new episode anyway. A good excuse to finally do something from our hardcover book:

It’s EPISODE #127, “TRY NOT TO DIE.” Also known as the third episode of the fifth season (!). S5E3, in entertainment-speak. New tracks tonight from RedBlueBlackSilver. Find out more about our book, our periodical, and all the other desert creations we make for you . . . on our home page, DesertOracle.com.

Is this episode about Mojave Spaceport? Well, it’s a place on the journey, to put in in “hobbit speak.” Tonight we get on the road, wander some small desert towns, make some real-estate schemes, and plan for a better future. Which starts now. This is EPISODE #126: MOJAVE SPACEPORT.

New tracks from RedBlueBlackSilver and some archival audio from our favorite radio priestess of the Western Airwaves, a century ago. Find out more about our book, our periodical, and all the other desert creations we make for you on our home page, DesertOracle.com.

EPISODE #125: ACCIDENTAL MIRACLE (AT OWENS VALLEY)

It’s our fifth season, our Five-Year Plan, tonight at 10 p.m. PST on Z 107.7 FM in Joshua Tree and across the Great Mojave Wilderness. EPISODE #125: OWENS VALLEY & THE ACCIDENTAL MIRACLE. What made the Owens Valley the way it is, in our time? An accident of history, of water grabs, of one group of humans using easy money to buy out another group of humans, that’s what preserved the most beautiful place in the world from the fate of the Central Valley. The same sort of accidental miracle that saved so much of the American southwest’s mountains and deserts from wide-scale development, agriculture, housing booms, industrialization, speculation.

A heretical prayer, is what we offer you tonight. With new (and classic) tracks from RedBlueBlackSilver. Find out more about our book, our periodical, and all the other desert creations we make for you on our home page, DesertOracle.com.

EPISODE #122: THE DARK WATCHERS

Where there are mountains, there are mysteries. Tonight we visit with some old friends who’ve long haunted the Indians, the Spaniards, the Americans and apparently anybody else who ever wandered by. They are called the Dark Watchers, and as usual their world is part of ours, tied up in our own recent history of desert mystics such as Aldous Huxley and the ancient culture of the Esselen. It’s Episode #122 of Desert Oracle Radio, written & hosted by Ken Layne, with new desert soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver. (And here’s the article in question.)

EPISODE #121: IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE

Some people like it, some people don’t. We are talking about the desert. And this week—challenged by a listener to stop romanticizing the desert southwest—we are joined by Phoenix writer & music man Jason P. Woodbury, to help us give a couple places a real hard time. Let’s give Sedona the business, etc. New soundscapes by RedBlueBlackSilver.
